PKU Four-week Chinese Language Studies Program, Spring 2023

Introduction

The Chinese Language Program is organized and administered by the International Students Division, and taught in the School of Chinese as a Second Language, aiming at students from all over the world who are interested in learning Chinese. Based on the original teaching method of MOOC and micro-class, the School of Chinese as a Second Language developed “online teaching” overall in spring of 2020.  After three years’ time, the school’s online teaching platform is in stable construction and has accumulated rich teaching experience. The Chinese Language Program will establish four-week comprehensive Chinese language courses, advanced business Chinese course and HSK topic courses (HSK level 4-6) in spring 2023. Students choose comprehensive Chinese language courses will be given 3 levels to choose – elementary, intermediate, and advanced (beginners’ course included), depending on the results from the online self-assessment questionnaire. The total class hours will be 40 (lecture) + 16 (review and practice). The class hour will be 8:00 – 18:00 (BJT). Students who completed the course will be awarded with Peking University transcripts and course completion certificate.

Courses Details

A. Class Mode: Textbook +Online Course +Teaching Assistant Guidance.

Teaching Platform: Canvas, Microsoft teams, Zoom platform, etc.

B. Curriculum:

Teachers provide weekly course materials beforehand (including learning requirements, key vocabulary explanations, preview requirements, etc.)

Live Online Courses (10 hours a week, 2 hours at a time). Online tutoring carried out by teaching assistants (4 hours a week, 2 hours at a time).

Friday afternoon: English Cultural Lectures, students can also share relevant online lecture resources of Peking University during the program.

PS: Class time is likely to vary with the continent you are staying.

Live online courses allow multiple replays in 48 hours.

C. Chinese classes: There are basic classes, elementary classes, intermediate classes and advanced classes. Before the start of the course, each learner needs to complete an online self-assessment questionnaire (containing 40 questions) of Chinese language proficiency. According to the results of the questionnaire, students are divided into classes of different levels (basic, elementary, intermediate and advanced). Each class will be limited to 15-20 students. In order to make full use of high-quality resources, classes with fewer than 8 students at the same level will be canceled and students need to choose other programs or courses.

D. Course Introduction

Comprehensive Chinese

1. Basic Class: Mainly for students who just start to learn Chinese. The course aims to cultivate students’ cognition and interest in basic Chinese language characteristics, so that students can use Chinese to communicate and solve basic needs. Course contents are Pinyin, common Chinese characters and most basic Chinese words and sentences, such as greeting, shopping, ordering food, asking directions and talking about hobbies.

2. Elementary Class: For those who have a vocabulary of more than 200 Chinese words. The course aims to improve students’ ability of Chinese listening, speaking, reading, and writing, so that they can communicate effectively and build a good foundation for further improving Chinese proficiency. The contents include basic Chinese grammar and daily conversation.

3. Intermediate Class: For those who have a vocabulary of more than 1200 Chinese words. The course aims to further improve students’ ability of Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing, expand their vocabulary, let them use Chinese accurately and proficiently to complete general communication such as life, study, work, etc., and can express in paragraphs on familiar daily topics.

4. Advanced Class: For those who have a vocabulary of more than 2500 Chinese words. The course aims to further expand students’ vocabulary and enable students to discuss and communicate their ideas on some general social topics.

Advanced Business Chinese course

Learning Objectives: (1) Training in listening, speaking, reading and writing on business matters mainly using Chinese.

(2) Understand the relevant policies and regulations of China's economy, trade and commerce, and how to conduct business cooperation negotiations.

Course content: Content includes introducing company profile, banking business, corporate investment, recruitment, benefits package and corporate training. Besides, the students will also learn some vocabularies, sentences and topics at business and work scenarios as a supplement.

HSK (new) Course

Learning Objectives: (1) Understand the types of questions and requirements of HSK Level 4, Level 5, and Level 6.

(2) Use exams to promote learning and improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Course content: In-depth analysis of the difficult points of the test; combination of lectures and exercises, combined with test question types, practice common vocabulary and grammar items; improve test taking strategies.

Attendance and Completion of the Course

Enter the online classrooms as required, and avoid coming late, leaving early or being absent.  Ask for leave when unable to attend classes for any reasons.

Being late or leave early for three times will be deemed as absent. One score will be deducted for one absence. If there is a doctor's leave, no point will be deducted. If there is no doctor's leave, it will be regarded as personal leave. If you are absent from personal leave, you will be deducted 0.5 points. In principle, students who are absent for more than one fourth of the total class hours of a course will not get the grade of the course in principle.

Exams and Grade Components

* The Overall Course Grade consists of three parts: scores of the course completion exam, scores of regular assignments and tests, and attendance rate; the second part accounts for 30% to 40% of the overall grade.

*Students will be offered an official transcript and a course completion certificate two weeks after course completion. One transcript for each student. The score is based on the hundred mark system, with the total class hours and the attendance of the students


Eligibility Requirements and Admission Process

Requirements:

Non-Chinese citizen with valid foreign passport;                                                      

Aged between 18 and 50 (inclusive);

In good health;

High school diploma or above;

No criminal record and be friendly to China.

Application Period:

Online application will start on December 1, 2022. The number of admissions is limited. Those who apply and meet the requirements will be admitted first, until the quota is full.

Step 1: Online application

Go to the online application website: http://www.studyatpku.com/ ⇒Create an account ⇒Sign in and click on “online application” ⇒Select the application type: ‘Non-Degree Programs Application’ ⇒Select the type of program: ‘Short-term Program (ST)’ ⇒Select “Spring Four-week Chinese Language Studies Program” under “Short-term program” ⇒Fill in the online application form and submit it.

Step 2: Submit e-documents and finish the Chinese self-assessment online

1. The following documents are required:

Photocopy of your passport information page, and the passport must be an ordinary passport within the validity period

Certificate of your highest academic qualification or Certificate of Enrolment of your current educational institution  (original or notarized version in either Chinese or English)

HSK Certificate or official transcripts of full-time Mandarin studies (if applicable)

Recommendation letter from the school or employing place  in either Chinese or English.

2. The applicants need to finish the online Chinese level self-assessment according to the instructions below. (only for students who apply for comprehensive Chinese course. Students applying for business Chinese and HSK courses should send an email to inform them that they do not need to take a Chinese proficiency test)

Please input your application number (202207XXXX), which you can find in the application system, to complete the self-assessment online.

Step 3: Review and admission

Applicants can check the status of their application online by logging into the application system.

Successful applicants should pay the tuition fee online when the online status reads “pay the tuition”. The tuition fee should be paid within 2 weeks. Successful applicants will also receive notice of their admission from Peking University via email.

Peking University will issue the acceptance letter (electronic version) to the candidates.

Note: The application fee will not be refunded. If the application materials are incomplete or the application fee is not paid, the application will not be accepted.

Tuition fee (including cost of textbooks):

Comprehensive Chinese Course: RMB 6,000/person;    

Advanced Business Chinese Course: RMB 7,000/person;

HSK Course: RMB 7,000/person

Refunds Policy:

Any student who wishes to withdraw from the program due to personal reasons must submit a written request to the International Students Division.

Withdrawals are eligible for a partial refund in line with the following guidelines:

Before February 14, 2023: 50% refund of tuition fees

February 14– February 21, 2023: 25% refund of tuition fees

On February 21, 2023 or later: no refund

Notice: Applicants shall bear the commission charge that may arise.
