The program is scheduled to take an exciting visit to Bejing, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai, witnessing the charm of China's reality in the eastern area of the country.

Route One

From June 28 to July 5, 2024, Peking University's China Deep Dive: Global Young Leaders Program kicked off.

Twenty-two American university youths from Harvard University, the University of Chicago, Cornell University, and the University of California, Berkeley, joined Peking University students in visiting Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai. Through both “understanding”and “experiencing”, they gained insights into the form and trends of China's development.

Enhancing Theoretical Knowledge

The program invited professors from various disciplines at Peking University to give lectures combining history and geography, economics, sociology, management, and other fields to provide an understanding of the current state of China's development.

“Unveiling the Secrets of Economic Growth in China and Globally” encouraged the youth to deeply consider the complex factors driving economic growth and to understand the logic behind China's economic development through practical experiences during visits.

“Global Development” discussed the complexity and resilience of the economic and technological relationships between China and the United States in their respective development pursuits.

“China's Digitalization” introduced the students to the history of Internet development in China and highlighted leading companies in the digital technology sector.

“Chinese Decision-Making and Development” showcased how the Chinese government addresses the balance between economic growth and global climate change, highlighting the mechanisms and processes involved in transitioning to a green economy.

Before the start of the program's journey outside Beijing, a Peking University professor accompanying the group gave an introductory talk titled “Understanding China through Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai”, focusing on the history and pathway of China's manufacturing industry development. Towards the end of the journey, the professor reviewed everyone's observations and insights, focusing on the Yangtze River Delta's continuous exploration in areas such as policy guidance, technological innovation, industrial upgrading, and green development since the reform and opening-up.

Emerging industries such as smart ports, new energy vehicles, digitalized automated kitchen appliances, and intelligent logistics offered a rich array of technological innovations and advancements.

Through close-up observation and hands-on interaction with various “black tech” and trending “Internet-famous” products, youths gained a broader perspective, immersing themselves in the appeal of China's technological development, intelligent manufacturing, and the vitality of innovation.

Yangshan Port

Shanghai Yangshan Deep-Water Port is currently the largest single-terminal container port globally, with the highest comprehensive intelligence and automation level. Witnessing firsthand the hardcore automation processes of this “smart port”, the youths were able to appreciate the logistical efficiency of this “super port”, which supports “Made in China” in reaching the world.

Experiencing the “digital kitchen appliances” revolution in China, the youths observed demonstrations of digital kitchen products and innovations, as well as the development of new AI and low-carbon concepts in the home appliance industry.

“I found ingredients in Chinese cuisine that resonate with Pakistani flavors,” shared a Pakistani student from Cornell University, after cooking a delicious stir-fried green pepper and pork dish.

Cainiao Group

The youths learned about the trends of globalization, greening, and digitization in China's logistics industry, including the transition from meeting domestic e-commerce logistics demands to building overseas logistics networks.

By visiting their intelligent factories, youths experienced the digital and intelligent transformation of China's light machinery industry.

Sijiqing Garment Wholesale Market

This is China's most influential primary wholesale and distribution market for clothing. The youths gained insight into China's textile and garment industry layout, industrial upgrading, and the forefront ideas in Chinese fashion, design, technology, and industry. They also witnessed the appeal of the emerging sales model, “livestream shopping”.

The youths had hands-on experiences with traditional Chinese cultural elements such as embroidery and round fans, classified as intangible cultural heritage.

From the rich historical and artistic heritage of Zhejiang and Shanghai, everyone deeply appreciated the vibrant and diverse culture of China, gaining a profound understanding of beauty in the coexistence of different civilizations.

West Lake

At the beautiful West Lake, the youths admired iconic scenic spots like the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon and the Lotus in the Breeze at the Winding Courtyard. At the Xiling Seal Engraver's Society, they learned and experienced the traditional art of rubbing, gaining a deep appreciation for the rich artistry embedded in Chinese civilization. The rolling lantern, originating from the Jiangsu and Zhejiang region, captivated many with its perpetual spinning and unextinguished flame. Some were so fascinated that they eagerly wanted to try it themselves.

Huangpu River

The youths enjoyed a panoramic tour of Shanghai's diverse urban landscapes, showcasing various historical periods. They marveled at the brilliant night view of the Bund, capturing memories with their phones amidst the mesmerizing sights.

The Forbidden City

The Forbidden City is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient wooden architectural complexes in the world. As a symbol of ancient Chinese royal architecture, it not only represents the pinnacle of traditional Chinese architecture but also embodies the profound cultural heritage of Chinese civilization. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Forbidden City attracts visitors worldwide, who come to experience its unique cultural depth and historical allure.

The visit to the Great Wall enabled the youths to experience the vastness and depth of Chinese civilization, as well as the exchange and learning between Chinese culture and the world's cultures.

The Great Wall

The Great Wall, hailed as one of the Eight Wonders of the World, is a monumental feat of ancient Chinese engineering. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts countless tourists from all over the world. It is not only a source of pride for China but also a shared cultural heritage for humanity.

Infinite Potential for a Bright Future

The program organized special visits focusing on modern city governance and Sino-American corporate collaborations, enabling youths to appreciate the “fruits” of Chinese-style modernization in urban development and the achievements and potential of China-U.S. cooperation towards a harmonious and prosperous future.

Hangzhou City
Brain Operation Command Center

At the Hangzhou City Brain Operation Command Center, the youths observed the impacts of the “City Brain” initiative. Through examples like traffic management, road safety inspections, and “Clean and Honest Online” services, they witnessed the transformative effects of digital governance on the city.

Hangzhou International
Expo Center

They revisited the highlights of the 2016 G20 Summit held in Hangzhou, gaining insights into the summit's significant influence on global economic governance and international cooperation.

Shanghai Disneyland

In a discussion, the youths learned about the close connection between the park's development and the growth of the Pudong New Area, appreciating the vast potential of foreign enterprises like Disney to adopt localized, joint-venture business models in China.

From June 26 to July 9, 2025
The program started again

Twenty-four American university youths from Stanford University, Cornell University, University of Chicago, University of California, University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University, joined Peking University students in visiting Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai. Compared to 2024, the program also visited Suzhou, a charming place of beauty and innovation.

Soochow University

During the visit to Soochow University, the delegation attended a lecture by Professor Xu Tao on globalisation and Suzhou's trade policies, followed by a Q&A on its industrial park and green initiatives.

After which, the delegation explored the historic scenery and modern landmarks in the campus in the accompaniment of local student volunteers.

At the Suzhou Industrial Park, the delegation learnt more about the history, policies and technological advancements of Suzhou. Through visits to local enterprises such as Navi Technology and Higer Bus, they observed advanced biotech equipment and autonomous vehicles in action. The close-up experience allowed them to get up close to China's rapid innovation speed.

Geely Automobile Factory

During the visit to Geely Automobile Factory,

students toured the exhibition hall, previewed unreleased models and experienced driving stimulators, showcasing the core production process from stamping to final assembling of components.

Wu-Yue Culture

At the Wu Culture Museum, the students were exposed to ancient artifacts that represented Suzhou's history and culture. Under the accompaniment of a tour guide, they learnt about fan culture, painted and signed their own folding fans, getting to know of traditional Jiangnan elegance through handcrafts.

Exploring Industrial Prosperity and Welcoming a Flourishing Era

The students visited leading enterprises and advanced manufacturing bases to experience the vibrancy of intelligent production lines and green industries up close. They gained a closer insight on how innovation and sustainability intertwine to drive high-quality growth, ushering in a new era of shred prosperity.

Southern Jiangsu Township

At Meilin Village, the youths saw firsthand the rural revitalisation results of the "Green Rural Revival Program"which was the best show of modern transformation. Its tidy environment, modern amenities and thriving local industries showcased China's rural area modernisation, making Meilin Village a model of common prosperity in Zhejiang today.
