The 110 faculty and teaching and research staff at our college are renowned both at home and abroad in their individual fields. Most of the faculty has overseas experience, working or studying in leading universities prior to joining the College of Engineering. They are conducting cutting-edge research in fields ranging from physical sciences and energy to public health and industrial management.

Departments & Programs

Reestablished in 2005, the College of Engineering currently incorporates five departments: Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics, Department of Energy & Resources Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering & Management, the Department of Mechanics & Engineering Science and the Department of Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics. 9 Ph.D. programs have been set up in order to cultivate the next generation of leaders in engineering practice, research and education.

Ph.D. Programs offered at College of Engineering

Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4 years (in normal circumstances), fulfill the designated number of credits, conduct research, complete the doctoral thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Students with bachelor's degree pursuing PhD degree in subjects of sciences or continuous program that involves postgraduate and doctoral studies, their study period at Peking University is normally 5 years. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate with the doctoral degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee.

Application

l  Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, with no criminal records, healthy both physically and psychologically, friendly to China and abiding by the laws and decrees of China. Residents of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan who have emigrated to other countries and are applying to Peking University as international students must present valid passport or citizenship documents dating from before April 30, 2018, along with proof of cancellation of Chinese nationality.

     Note: The exit and entry administration authority of the public security organ of China reserves the right to judge whether an applicant still has Chinese nationality. If during the application period or even after the admission or registration the applicant is judged to be still holding Chinese nationality, his/her application, admission, registration or even enrollment will be nullified. 

l  Applicants for Ph.D. Program must have attained a master's degree. Students with bachelor’s degree could apply for PhD program in subjects of sciences or continuous program that involves postgraduate and doctoral studies.

1. Contact an Appropriate Professor

Before you apply for a program, we strongly recommend that you contact an appropriate professor in advance. Potential applicants should contact prospective research advisors to proactively discuss potential research plans. 2. Online Application:

 Visit the application system (http://www.studyatpku.com), fill in the application and upload the following documents:

1) Graduation and degree certificates and degree authentication in Chinese or English. For degree certificates in other languages, applicants are required to upload both the original copy and a notarized copy in Chinese or English. Degree diplomas awarded by overseas universities must be authenticated by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSCSE). Degree diplomas awarded by universities on the Chinese mainland must be authenticated by the Center for Student Services and Development, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSSD).

Note: Applicants who graduated before 2024 must upload their degree authentication report during the application period. Applicants expected to graduate in 2024 must provide an official letter from their current university stating their expected graduation date, submit their certificate of graduation upon being preadmitted, and present their original degree diploma upon registration. 

2) Official transcripts of the applicant’s academic achievement, including courses taken and standards achieved. These must be original documents or notarized copies either in Chinese or English.

5) Two recommendation letters from professor(s) or associate professor(s) related to the applicant’s major (or equivalent professionals with relevant academic title), either in Chinese or English. Once applicants submit the application the application system will send a link to the recommenders, and the recommenders should click the link and complete the recommendation either by filling out the form online or by uploading the scanned copy of the signed letter.

6) For English-taught PhD programs at College of Engineering, applicants whose mother tongue is not English are required to submit TOEFL, iBT (90 points or above) or other certificates to prove their English language proficiency.

7) Information page of the valid passport (passport type must be ordinary). The passport’s date of expiry should be after December 2024.

8) Table of contents and abstracts of the applicant’s academic publications and any other original achievements in his/her field (if applicable).

Applicants should scan the original or notarized application documents in color using a scanner. Images captured by mobile phone or camera are NOT acceptable.

3. Application Fee: 800 RMB for each program

Non-refundable. Paid online before the application deadline. Any other currency or travel check would not be accepted. Applications with incomplete documents or without application fee payment will not be processed.

4. Application Period: From now to February 28, 2024.

5. Admission Evaluation

1) Initial Screening. After the International Student Division send the application information which meet the basic application requirements to CoE, an admissions committee in each department comprised of CoE faculty and invited international professors select qualified students based on application information. The strength of the recommendation letters, the academic record at the applicant’s undergraduate/graduate institution, and his/her research agenda, with its fit within the general research interests of CoE’s faculty, are all evaluated, as evidence of intellectual ability and a commitment to a career in research;

2) Evaluation Interview. Applications who passed the screening will receive an Evaluative Interview around April 2024, which may include one or more video interviews;

3) The admission committee makes its recommendations for admission to CoE.

6. Admission

1) On the basis of the CoE's examination results, the PKU Admission Office of the Graduate School will review and make the preliminary admission list.

2) The CoE will publish the preliminary admission list before the end of May.

3) The pre-admitted candidates should download and print the application form and, together with other required original application documents (except for degree diploma and recommendation letters), deliver or mail the materials to the International Student Division of Peking University before May 31, 2024.

4) The International Student Division will issue an admission notice, visa application form (JW201/JW202) and other documents to the admitted students in late June 2024.

7. Enrollment

Admitted students will complete the registration procedures and enroll at Peking University in early September 2024. The specific time will be announced in the admission notice. All students should present their original degree certificates and submit their degree authentication as required upon registration for the enrollment qualification review. Students who fail the enrollment qualification review will be disqualified from enrollment at Peking University.

8. Tuition Fee (per person per year): 40,000 RMB

9. Scholarships

New international students may apply for the following scholarships:

(1) Chinese Government Scholarship (Type B): tuition waiver, for-free accommodation, monthly living expenses and medical insurance provided in accordance with the regulations.

(2) Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students: tuition subsidy.

(3) Peking University Scholarship for International Students: tuition waiver, monthly living expenses, medical insurance.
