Application Notice of PKU Yuke/Pre-university Program for International Students (2026 Entry)

Established in 2000, Peking University’s Yuke/Pre-university program strives to use the university’s excellent educational resources to cultivate a cohort of outstanding international talents. The program provides one to two years of preparatory training for academically outstanding high-school graduates who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree at Peking University. It is committed to creating a new pattern of all-rounded education, and we strive to provide professional language training, opportunities for international cultural exchanges, as well as a smooth transition to “Double First-Class” undergraduate education, and a variety of other academic platforms for international students studying at PKU. After finishing the prorgram, international students who pass the final examination and review and meet the admission standards are admitted to PKU’s undergraduate program.

 

Experienced Teaching Staff & Exclusive Teaching Material

The main subject is Chinese language and it is taught by PKUs School of Chinese as a Second Language. Besides Chinese language, students will also minor in mathematics, which is organized and taught by PKU’s School of Mathematical Sciences. Other courses and extracurricular activities will utilize the university’s excellent resources and provide students with a diversified and high-quality learning experience.

 

Teaching staff from the School of Chinese as a Second Language are highly qualified in academic field and 65% of the teachers have a Doctorate degree. The majority of the teachers have Chinese language teaching experience in overseas universities or Confucius Institutes, hence enabling them to better understand the characteristics of Chinese learning for international students. Boya series, selected as the tailored textbooks, are compiled and reviewed by PKU’s experts team and published by Peking University Press, to ensure a clear, systematic, and scientific teaching objective.

 

Regarding mathematics learning, the expert group, established by the School of Mathematical Sciences, has carefully compiled exclusive textbooks adapted to the characteristics of mathematics learning for international students, fully meeting the needs of the programs students, and effectively assisting their connection with undergraduate studies.

 

Undergraduate Experience & Liberal Education

Program students will have the opportunity to take courses together with undergraduate students and experience campus life and extracurricular activities in advance. In addition to improving students’ language skills, getting to know the undergraduate studies in advance can broaden their general knowledge and academic horizons, and cultivate their ability to think and study independently.

 

Combining Learning with Practice & Unifying Ability with Moral Integrity

The program emphasizes both academic and practical ability. Aside from the academic curriculum, various extracurricular activities and field trips will be conducted to help students integrate into the group and into the university better and faster, and to gain more knowledge about China. There are also abundant recreational and cultural activities to help students balance work and rest.

The program will reserve dorm rooms for its students at PKU Zhongguanyuan Global Village. Students will be able to have a safe and comfortable accommodation experience, and enjoy a pleasant study and living experience together with other international students from all around the world. Whether in class or in daily life, students will be immersed in an academically inspiring and mentally relaxing environment. During the program, international students can study with outstanding PKU peers. In the future, they will progress together with alumni partners on the global stage and lead the world into a new era.

 

【Eligibility and Application Criteria】

1. In principle, applicants should be between the ages of 17 and 23, in good physical and mental health, good academic performance, in line with the relevant provisions of the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China, non-Chinese citizens with valid foreign passports, and no criminal record.

 

Note: Whether the applicant has the nationality of the People's Republic of China while having a foreign nationality is subject to the nationality determination conclusion of the Exit and Entry Administration department of the Chinese public security organ. If the applicant is found to have Chinese nationality after the application, admission and enrollment, the application qualification, admission qualification, enrollment registration qualification, study qualification or student status will be cancelled.

 

2. Applicants must have a full-time high school graduation degree (excluding Chinese ordinary high schools). In principle, primary school to high school should be in line with overseas basic education system.

 

3. Applicants with the following conditions should note that they must meet the following requirements:

 3.1 According to the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China and the relevant provisions of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, if both or one of the parents are Chinese citizens and have settled in a foreign country, and the applicant has the foreign nationality at birth, he/she does not have Chinese nationality.

As an international student applicant, he/she must hold a valid foreign passport or a documentary proof of nationality before April 30, 2023 and has a record of actual residence in a foreign country for at least 2 years from April 30, 2023 to April 30, 2026 (actual residence in a foreign country for 9 months within a year can be counted as one year, based on entry and exit stamps).

 3.2 According to the relevant regulations of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, residents of the Chinese Mainland, and those from Chinas Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions who apply as international students after emigrating and acquiring a foreign nationality, must hold a valid foreign passport or a documentary proof of nationality before April 30, 2023, and a certificate indicating that their Chinese nationality has been cancelled. There should be a record of actual residence in a foreign country for more than 2 years between April 30, 2023 to April 30, 2026 (actual residence in a foreign country for 9 months within a year can be counted as one year, based on entry and exit stamps).

 

【Curriculum】

Chinese Language Classes (20~24 class hours/week): Compulsory classes. A Chinese language placement test is scheduled during orientation for identifying students’ current language skills. Students are divided into different level classes according to their proficiency.

Each level has listening, speaking, reading and writing courses to improve students’ comprehensive language ability. At the same time, according to their own interests and future plans, students in the Intermediate Chinese and Advanced Chinese classes can choose to study professional Chinese in linguistics, literature, law, economics, diplomacy, politics and other fields, allowing them to lay a solid foundation for their future studies in the undergraduate program.

 

Mathematics Classes (4 class hours/week): Elective classes. A math placement test is scheduled during orientation for identifying students’ current math level.

Students are divided into different classes according to their current math level, Chinese level, as well as students’ potential undergraduate major focus. The math courses mainly include Basic Mathematics(Level B) and Advanced Mathematics(Level A).

 

【Study Plan and Undergraduate Majors】

A study plan will be customized for students, based on each student’s level in Chinese language and mathematics, combined with his/her potential undergraduate major focus.

【How to Apply】

1. Complete the application form online: Log onto the PKU International Student Online Registration System (website: http://www.studyatpku.com/), complete the application form,  submit the form, then print it. 2. Applicants should submit the following application materials in hardcopy to the International Students Division via EMS express mail:

1) One application form. After submitting the online application, each applicant should print out the application form, sign the form, and attach his/her photo.

2) One letter of expected graduation/ certificate of enrollment (original document). If it is neither in Chinese nor in English, the original notarized translation in Chinese or English is required, verified by an official party, such as a government agency or a diplomatic mission.

* For high school graduates, to avoid the risk of loss or damage during mailing, do not mail the original high school diploma or certificate of graduation directly. Please submit the original notarized copy of the high school diploma or graduation certificate. If the original is neither in Chinese nor in English, please submit the original notarized translation in Chinese or English.

3) One high school academic transcript (original document). If the academic transcript is neither in Chinese nor in English, the original notarized translation in Chinese or English is required.

4)One personal statement written in Chinese or English. (click here for the template: Personal Statement)

5)Two letters of recommendation (original document). One letter must be written by a teacher or head teacher from the applicant’s high school. For the other one, theres no specific requirements for the job title.

6)One photocopy of the passport. The passports expiration date should be beyond July 2026.

7)A letter of commitment (click here for the template: Letter of Commitment, please fill it out in Chinese or English).

8) Optional materials: including but not limited to transcripts of SAT, IB, A-Levels, ACT, or academic transcripts for any college-entrance examination taken in the applicant’s home country, other certificates or awards, HSK transcripts, documents indicating language proficiency in any foreign language that applicants believe may support their application (photocopy is sufficient).

【Tuition Fees

CNY27,000/semester.

*Students are required to pay the full tuition fees according to the academic schedule prior to registration.

 

【Admission】

The results of the preliminary review and pre-admission will be notified by email in batches in January, March, and June 2026. Applicants are advised to pay attention and stay updated.

 

【Accommodation】

Peking University Zhongguanyuan Global Village

【Scholarships】

After completing the program, if the students are eligible for PKUs undergraduate program, they will have the opportunity to apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship, Beijing Government Scholarship, Peking University Scholarship, etc.

 

【Medical Insurance】

According to the relevant regulations of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, students are required to purchase the Comprehensive Insurance Plan for International Students online before or on the day of registration. Students who do not have valid medical insurance are not allowed to register.

 

【Visa Information】

Students admitted to PKU should apply for a student visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their country with the letter of admission and the JW201/202 form. International students who will study in China for over 6 months are required to obtain an "X1" visa, which will only be valid for 30 days upon arrival in China; upon arriving in China, they must come to the International Student Division and apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days in order to obtain a legal status in China.

 

Please refer to the latest policies and regulations for visa and entry matters. The university can issue admission materials in accordance with relevant regulations, including admission notice and the JW202 form.

Other Items

1. Applicants should pay timely attention to the relevant documents and notices issued and sent by the university. All consequences caused by personal reasons such as applicant negligence shall be borne by the applicant himself/herself.

2. If the higher authorities introduce new enrollment policies in the current year, the university will make corresponding adjustments and announcements. For matters not covered, relevant policies of the higher authorities and the university shall be implemented.
