About the PKU Chinese Language Summer School

    The Peking University Chinese Language Summer School is aimed at students from all over the world with an interest in Chinese. The summer school is offered as a four-week, six-week, or eight-week inclusive Chinese program. In order to help students better understand China, in addition to the Chinese language instruction, the PKU Chinese Language Summer School provides a series of free lectures on interesting facets of China’s society and culture. Other extracirricular events includes regular visits to well-known attractions in Beijing, as well as exciting student exchange activities.

Application Requirements and Admission Process

Requirements:

  • Non-Chinese citizen                                                           

  • Between 18 and 50 years of age (inclusive)

  • In good health

  • High school diploma or above

  • No criminal record

Summer 2018 Program: Online applications will open on December 1, 2017

Applications are on a ‘rolling’ (first come, first served) basis – until all places are filled

Submit the Following Documents Online(Scanned  Copies):

1. Photocopy of your passport information page

2. Certificate of your highest academic achievement, for example a diploma or degree, or proof of enrollment at your current educational institution)

3. A recommendation letter in either English or Chinese

4. HSK Certificate or official transcripts of full-time Mandarin training (where applicable)

Note: All documents must be in either Chinese or English. If they are in another language, a notarized copy in Chinese or English must be provided

Refunds Policy:

Any student who wishes to withdraw from the program must submit a written request prior to registration. Upon approval, the tuition fee will be refunded in accordance with the guidelines.

Withdrawals are eligible for a partial refund in line with the following guidelines:

On or before June 1, 2018: 50% refund of tuition fees

Between June 1 – June 30, 2018: 25% refund of tuition fees

On July 1 or later,2018: no refund

 

Program Details

Class hours: Monday to Friday(8:00-12:00), four hours per day (twenty hours per week).

Mandarin course: The courses are Intensive Chinese Reading and Spoken Chinese. All courses are taught in Chinese.

Intensive Chinese Reading

The aim of Intensive Chinese Reading is to improve the students'   reading and writing skills by learning vocabulary and grammar

The aim of Spoken Chinese is to   enhance the proficiency of oral communication

Class arrangements: Classes will be divided into 5 levels—basic, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, and advanced. Students will be required to take an online Chinese language assessment after being admitted. There will be no more than 20 students in each class.

Chinese language assessment: All the accepted applicants will be required to take an online Chinese language assessment, and students will be placed into different classes according to the assessment results. The Chinese language assessment will be sent to the admitted students by email.

Note: In order to better make use of qualified resources, a class will be cancelled if the number of enrolled students doesn't reach 8. In that case, students in that class need to transfer to another class or program.

Lectures: Culture lectures will be held on two afternoons per week and last two hours each. All lectures will be conducted in English.These lectures will be on subjects such as Chinese history and culture, language learning methods and cultural exchange.

Transcript and Certificate: Upon completion of the language course, students who meet the assessment requirements will be issued with a certificate and a transcript. Students who attend more than 75% of culture lectures will receive an additional certificate of attendance.

Extracurricular Activities: Peking University offers program students a series of extracurricular activities to experience Chinese culture and get a deeper understanding of China. The following activities are currently planned but are subject to change.

Visa, Insurance, and Accommodation

Visa Application

Successful applicants should apply for X1/X2 visa via their local Chinese embassy or consulate by providing their ordinary passport, admission notice, visa application form, and other required documents. Information can be found online. Students must enter China with X visa and ensure that their visa will be valid for the entire duration of their stay in China.

Insurance

All international students are required to purchase insurance in China after your arrival. Failure to purchase insurance will result in the cancellation of your registration.

Accommodation

On-Campus Housing:

Successful applicants can apply for accommodation in a student apartment .
Please note that only limited vacancies are available on the basis of first come first served. If there are no vacancies, then students need to arrange off-campus housing.

Note: International students not living in on-campus housing or a hotel must, according to Chinese law, register at the local police station within 24 hours of arriving in the country. When registering, students must provide the exact local address as well as a telephone number.

On-Campus Dining

Students will receive a PKU student ID card upon registration, which can be used to purchase food in the on-campus dining halls and other stores and eateries.
